Lust Object of the Month
July's LOOTM is the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate, Code Name "Frank." Its purposeful lines and large redial engine gave it excellent performance. In fact, it was fast enough to make interception at altitude troublesome for even the best Allied fighters.
The early versions were equipped with 1800 hp twin-row radial engines, while later aircraft boasted up to 2500 hp! This gave the Hayate ("Hurricane") performance on par with the P-47 "Thunderbolt," the Lavochkin La-7, and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9--esteemed company indeed.
There is only one surviving Hayate out of nearly 3500 built. It is a beautiful example of form following function, with maneuverability for which Japanese fighters were know coupled with durability and the ability to absorb combat damage. Enjoy.
